The idea.
Like exploring music with someone who knows it inside out, helping you find what to hear next and understand why it connects.
Follow connections in rhythm, production, mood, or instrumentation.
Explore neighboring styles, shared scenes, different eras, and musical lineage. Leave room for something unexpected.
Understand what connects two records, with room for your own ears to disagree.
Related-record discovery and explanations are in development.
How it works
Start with something playing now, or bring a song you already love. Listening and analysis are the starting point for exploring its connections.
Capture 15 seconds through your microphone. On supported desktop browsers, you can also share audio from another app or tab.
Load or drop a file, or save a YouTube link. Whole song analysis is in development.
The intelligence underneath
Record Crush is the first product from Useful Magic. We’re developing a system that combines audio analysis with structured musical knowledge, metadata, and context.
Your ears have a say, too. The native app lets listeners suggest corrections while keeping the original analysis intact. We’re extending that approach to the musical connections Record Crush will help you explore.
Before you begin.
Capture 15 seconds, load and play a full local audio file, save a YouTube link, and keep discoveries and listening notes in this browser. Track identification, sound analysis, related-record discovery, full-song YouTube analysis and account sync are not connected yet.
We’re planning a “Keep listening?” prompt after the first 15 seconds, so you can choose a longer capture for deeper analysis. This preview currently stops at 15 seconds. Files and links are intended for whole-song analysis.
A native iPhone app is in development. This site offers an early browser workspace. Sharing audio from other apps is available only where supported by desktop browsers; the phone app does not capture other apps yet.
The native app supports listener corrections to analysis. This browser preview currently supports personal listening notes; it does not submit corrections or audio contributions. Corrections to recommended musical connections are still in development.
They stay in this browser on this device. Audio is retained only when you choose it. You can delete saved discoveries, and clearing browser storage also removes them. Keeping audio locally is separate from contributing it.
Follow your ears.
